Katy Trail.

A major effort to enhance one of Tulsa’s most unique recreation corridors is taking root. Beginning this week, Up With Trees will be planting 240 new trees along a portion of the Katy Trail, marking the first step in a broader community-driven vision to beautify and strengthen the seven-mile trail system connecting Tulsa and Sand Springs.

A partnership including River Parks Authority, Sand Springs Parks & Recreation Department, Up With Trees, and additional community stakeholders, is launching a year-long visioning process to gather public input and develop a comprehensive beautification plan for the Katy Trail. The long-term strategy will guide future improvements, including expanded tree canopy, rest areas, park maintenance enhancements, and other amenities designed to improve the trail experience for residents and visitors alike.

Community members are encouraged to share their ideas and priorities by completing a public survey at: https://shorturl.at/lLGUo

The Katy Trail has been identified as a high-priority planting area through advanced Canopy software tools, which help determine ideal locations for tree canopy growth using a combination of demographic, socioeconomic, and environmental data. Factors considered include areas with low existing tree canopy, available planting space, household income, vulnerable populations, and unemployment rates.

Strategically expanding tree canopy along the trail can help address key community challenges, including:

  • Improved stormwater management
  • Energy savings and reduced urban heat impacts
  • Better air quality
  • Human health and wellness benefits
  • More equitable access to green space

The upcoming beautification plan will also address important trail design and environmental considerations to ensure long-term success and sustainability, including:

  • Soil compaction and erosion
  • Flooding concerns
  • Sun exposure, wind, and airflow
  • Line of sight and trail safety
  • Clearance conflicts and infrastructure compatibility
  • Native tree species selection
  • Evergreen options for year-round screening
  • Food-bearing and ornamental tree opportunities

Following the planning phase, partners will pursue fundraising to support a multi-year implementation strategy that transforms the Katy Trail into a greener, more comfortable, and more connected destination for the region.
