American Smoketree

The American Smoketree is attributed with having one of the best fall color displays of any of our North American native trees, having a color that can last up to a month. With its contorted limb structure and compelling fish-scaled bark pattern on full display in the winter, mixed with the silky pink spring leaves, the American Smoketree has a true four-season presence. Described as hardy and adaptable to many adverse soil types, it grows best in alkaline soil with full sun. Thriving in a larger city environment, the American Smoketree is highly tolerant of urban pollution, and is drought tolerant, and disease resistant. American Smoketrees have a mature height of 15-30 ft and should survive at least 60 years. It may not be a pollinator magnet, but it does attract bees and butterflies, and provides good nesting for birds.
