Bloodgood Maple

A cultivar of the Japanese Maple, the Bloodgood Maple is an ideal tree for smaller yards. They bloom in spring, and this is when the red in their foliage is often most vibrant. The color darkens in the summer to a burgundy and although the leaves can become even more prominent in the fall, the foliage is beautiful for a full three seasons of the year. Forming an attractive branching pattern, it will often have multiple sub-trunks. With palmate foliage, it bears lobes that fan out from a central point. These trees are relatively immune to diseases and pests. However, insects such as aphids, scale, borers, and root weevils can be a problem, as can mites. Root rot and Verticillium wilt can strike if the tree is grown in wet, cold soil so allowing the soil to dry out between watering sessions is a good way to prevent these diseases.
