Coliseum Maple

Unlike most maples, the Coliseum Maple usually produces root suckers around the base of the tree to form extensive groves over time. Coliseum Maples have Palmate leaves (5-7 lobes) that emerge purplish-green in spring, mature to dark green by summer and finally turn golden yellow to red in fall. It also has milky sap exuding from the leaf stem when cut. Yellowish-green flowers bloom in April and double-winged samaras ripen in fall. Mature bark is greenish-gray and furrowed. There are no serious insect or disease problems, but potential disease problems include verticillium wilt, leaf spots, tar spot, canker and root rots. Aphids, scale, borers, caterpillars, and mites may be potential insect problems.
