Japanese Zelkova

The Japanese Zelkova is a tree that can provide plenty of shade for spreading branches. It can withstand several tough conditions making it a good option for urban areas. It has smooth bark, along with medium green leaves that turn to shades of yellow, orange, brown, deep red to reddish purple in the fall. While it can withstand most soil types, they prefer deep, moist, well-drained soils and do well in full sun. When properly maintained, they are drought and wind resistant, and are tolerant against Dutch elm disease. Young trees are susceptible to frost so any transplanting should be done in the spring. Additionally, any pruning should be done in the fall, and the Japanese Zelkova will require some pruning to develop a strong structure.
