Sweetgum
With fall color that steals the attention of most who see it, Sweetgum trees animate landscapes with their star-shaped leaves. These trees require a higher quality soil with access to good amounts of moisture, and as they grow toward maturity, will be an excellent source of shade. They also provide shelter and food to songbirds and small mammals. For those concerned about the spiky fruit which Sweetgums produce, there are varieties available which do not bear fruit.
