Winged Sumac

The Winged Sumac is a deciduous shrub or sometimes small tree with an open crown of stout spreading branches. Common and widespread, this shrub forms thickets from root sprouts, thrives in open uplands and valleys, and is a pioneer shrub on sandstone outcrops. It is occasionally planted for its attractive, glossy leaves and extravagant fruits. The sour fruits are enjoyed by wildlife, specifically birds, and can be nibbled or made into a refreshing drink, like lemonade.
